Ruka receives Sustainable Travel Finland label
First ever Sustainable Travel Finland labeled ski resort in Finland!
The idea of Sustainable Travel Finland programme is to provide companies and destinations with a sustainable development path; a concrete toolkit for sustainable tourism that makes it easier to adopt sustainable practices and choices in the everyday business. The label is only awarded for those companies and destinations that have undergone the entire Sustainable Travel Finland programme and fulfilled the criteria. Program also includes regular auditing. – We have been working purposefully for sustainable tourism since 2008, when the joint environmental program of Ruka and Pyhä was introduced. Receiving the Sustainable Travel Finland label is an important and gratifying recognition for us for our commitment to responsible operations. I believe that our customers also value it highly, says Jusu Toivonen, Pyhätunturi Oy's local director, who is also responsible for Pyhä and Ruka's responsibility programs.
Pyhä Ski resort became the first carbon-neutral ski resort in the Nordic countries in 2011, followed by Ruka in 2018 - the second ski resort in Finland. In 2019, the Ruka and Pyhä environmental programs evolved into a responsibility program that also covers social and economic responsibility.
– As a family company, responsibility has been a natural part of our operations for decades. Nature and snow are our most important assets and the reason why we want to protect them. We work to ensure that our customers continue to enjoy the joys of the snow in the future, says Ville Aho, CEO of Rukakeskus Oy.
